Matariki story
Critical Thinking Questions:
- Why is Matariki particularly important for our NZ Nation?
Matariki is important to NZ because it has been celebrated by Maori as the new year for generations
- Should we all celebrate, just those who choose to, or just Maori people?
I think we should all celebrate it as one because it will bring NZ closer together.
- How long has Matariki been celebrated for?
Maori have celebrated Matariki for generations and generations.
Practical thinking Questions:
- Go back and look at your calendar/camera roll and see what you were doing on 15th June last year. Were you celebrating Matariki? Either way, make sure to book it in for this year!
We had a shared lunch to celebrate matariki last year.
- Think of an awesome way Matariki could be celebrated at school?
We could go around the field with other classes and do different fun activities.
- Do you think we should have a public holiday for Matariki? If so, get out there and write a letter/give a call to your Local MP explaining why! Yes
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you to explain why i think we should have a public holiday to celebrate Matariki in New Zealand. I feel it would help to bring us all together as New Zealanders in a fun way. It would be a great way for us to learn about stars, constellations and clusters of stars. I also feel its of more importance to New Zealanders than say the queens birthday.
I hope can think about my reasons.
Regards,
Vincent
